Asia ahead in CEM market
According to the high-tech market research company In-Stat, Asia has become the largest contract electronic manufacturing (CEM) market in the world. It is expected that Asia’s CEM market will grow to US$161.90bn by 2009, more than doubling its US$73.35bn worth in 2004.
"With China and Taiwan already strong in this field, other Asian countries such as India, Thailand, and Vietnam are emerging as strong contenders for low-cost manufacturing of electronic equipment," says Prakash Vaswani, In-Stat analyst. "The total CEM capacity in Asia will grow to 65% of the world's CEM capacity by 2009, with China leading the way."
In-Stat’s recent report "Asia CEM and Assembly Capacity by Country" (#IN0602406ASM) found that Asia’s CEM and assembly capacity was almost 52% of the global CEM capacity in terms of square footage in 2005. It also took the view that electronics manufacturers in Asia have the potential to move into design services.
