JDSU has strongest quarter in four years

JDSU of San Jose, CA, USA has had its strongest revenue and earnings performance in more than four years.

For fiscal Q2/2006 (to end December), revenues were $312.9m, up 21% on the previous quarter’s $258.3m and up 73% on $180.5m a year ago. Of total revenues 35% were Optical Communications ($109.6m); 19% Commercial and Consumer ($59.4m); and 46% Communications Test and Measurement ($146.0m, its first full quarter contribution since this business was acquired in August 2005). North America comprised 62%, European 24%, and Asia-Pacific 14%.

Non-GAAP earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) were $7.9m compared to a loss of $4.3m the previous quarter and $25.7m a year ago.

The results highlight “expansion in concert with an aggressive cost reduction program,” according to CEO Kevin Kennedy.

At the end of the quarter, JDSU held $843.9m in cash, cash equivalents, short-term investments and restricted cash. For the March quarter, JDSU expects revenue of $304-321m.
