Veeco 2006 MBE Award Winners

Veeco Instruments Inc., co-sponsoring two major MBE awards this year, recognized individuals whose innovations have significantly advanced the field of MBE. Each award consists of a monetary honorarium and an engraved plaque.

The 2006 Al Cho Award, co-sponsored by Veeco Instruments Inc. and other participants within the MBE community, has been awarded to Professor Yoshiji Horikoshi of Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. Professor Horikoshi was presented the award at this year’s International MBE Conference that took place in Tokyo, Japan on September 7 for his pioneering contributions to MBE with the invention of Migration Enhanced Epitaxy (MEE), producing a near-perfect atomic surface arrangement.

The 2006 MBE Innovator Award, co-sponsored by Veeco Instruments Inc. and the North American MBE organization, has been awarded to Dr. William E. Hoke of Raytheon. Dr. Hoke was presented the award at this year’s NAMBE Conference that took place at Duke University in Durham for his outstanding contributions in metamorphic growth of HEMTs, HBTs, and PIN photodetectors.

“Veeco congratulates this year’s outstanding award winners, as well as extends our sincere thanks to all innovative contributors in MBE,” said Jeff Hohn, General Manager, Veeco MBE Operations. “We’re honoured to support these awards acknowledging the innovators that expand MBE technology, capability, and market applications”

The purpose of both the NAMBE and International MBE organizations is to share the latest research discoveries in MBE and the new materials and devices based upon MBE, as well as progress in further developing MBE as a high-volume manufacturing technology.
