NMI manufacturing benchmark initiative

The National Microelectronics Institute have initiated a benchmark study for its semiconductor manufacturing members within production, equipment engineering, purchasing, human resources, training and development.

The purpose of the study is to help member companies improve operational activities by benchmarking against industry best practice. The initiative complements the extensive industry network and capability mapping that is central to NMIs mission of building a community across the microelectronics industry supply chain in the UK and Ireland.

Productivity consultant David Law said "it is crucial for all manufacturing companies to continually improve operational efficiencies and is especially true for semiconductor manufacturers competing at a global level.

" The UK still boasts a strong semiconductor manufacturing base with specific competencies in power management and analogue applications. This initiative is designed to support that activity and upgrade indigenous manufacturing capability that resides here."

Acknowledging the motivation behind the network, Derek Boyd NMI's CEO said
"A primary aim of many of the NMI's initiatives is to encourage member companies to work together in non-competitive areas and benefit from collaborative learning and knowledge exchanges."

This initiative is on-going with a vision to develop key manufacturing performance metrics; and interested parties should contact David Law at the NMI for further details.
