Endwave transceivers comply with upcoming ROHS deadline

Endwave Corporation announced the delivery of their first transceiver designed to be fully compliant with the new environmental Restriction on Hazardous Substances Directive 2002/95/EC (the "RoHS Directive").

According to the RoHS Directive, member states of the EU are obligated to ensure that, from July 1, 2006, new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market contains minimal levels of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). Companies that do not comply with the RoHS Directive may be subject to penalties and, in some cases, may be prevented from selling non-conforming product in the EU. Endwave's new design exceeds RoHS requirements by completely eliminating lead-based solders from electronic assemblies, which have, in some applications, received an exemption in the RoHS Directive until 2010. While Europe is widely viewed as the leader in this effort, similar restrictions are envisioned for future equipment deployments in China, Japan, the USA, and other regions of the world.

Endwave's first RoHS-compliant commercial product delivery was an integrated transceiver for Nokia's FlexiHopper and FlexiHopper Plus microwave radios. Endwave has been working towards the transition of all applicable telecom products to full RoHS Directive compliance, with this first qualification approval well ahead of the July 1, 2006 statutory deadline. Equipment used for military and national security applications are currently exempt from RoHS Directive requirements.
