Optilon advanced composite reflector improves LCDs

DuPont has launched DuPont Optilon Advanced Composite Reflector (ACR), a new product designed to significantly improve the performance of LCDs. It allows better light utilization and colour balance in displays, with lower overall display cost. Optilon reflectors are located in the rear of the display backlight, and reflect light to the front of the display with very high efficiency. Initial use of the product, now commercial, is in 32-inch diagonal LCD televisions.

"This is another example of DuPont's broad portfolio of science and technology coming together to provide unique materials, films and technologies not previously used in displays," said Cynthia C. Green, vice president and general manager, DuPont Fluoroproducts. "We continue to find and develop new opportunities that bring DuPont innovations to the industry to make displays perform better, more efficiently and at lower cost for customers and consumers."

Optilon ACR reflects light with up to 98% efficiency and all colors equally well, including blue light. In addition, the light is reflected over a very large range of angles, up to five times greater than conventional reflectors. With this combination of properties, the use of Optilon ACR results in more light emanating from the front of the display, with more balanced display colour.

DuPont plans to extend the Optilon brand with new products currently in development, including single-layer, wet-coated anti-reflective films. Optilon anti-reflective films would be located on the top of the display to eliminate unwanted reflections and glare. They combine outstanding optical performance with the cost-effectiveness of a single-layer film.
