Vitesse Smashes Bandwidth Barriers with Record 1.5 Terabit/s Switching in Single Device

Vitesse Semiconductor has unveiled the world’s highest capacity semiconductor device with breakthrough 1.5 Terabit per second (Tbps) switching capacity and advanced Signal Integrity technology. This, it says will lay the groundwork for new broadband services such as HDTV, Video-on-Demand and Fiber-to-the Home (FTTH).

With low-latency switching capability, the 11 Gbps-per-port, 144 × 144 VSC3040 asynchronous crosspoint switch delivers market-enabling capacity for storage, video and network equipment used in Core, Metro and Enterprise environments.

Network capacity is being driven by 200% annual growth in Internet bandwidth demand and from the deployment of new high-definition video services, according to Insight. With networking systems needing to support these exponentially increasing bandwidth requirements, the VSC3040 has been tailored for the aggregation, switching and transport of these data links from a wide array of sources. This higher data rate capability and protocol transparent operation is designed to match a broad range of related protocols and applications, including HDTV, SONET/SDH, Ethernet, Storage, and many others.

“The VSC3040 is a game-changing building block for enabling bandwidth capacity in Core, Metro and Edge networking systems,” said Juan Garza, Product Marketing Manager, Network Products Division at Vitesse. “An exponential bandwidth leap is required to keep up with the next generation of Internet, Optical, Video and Data services, which is what the VSC3040 delivers.”

The VSC3040 adds to nearly a decade of crosspoint product and related signal integrity technology innovations from Vitesse. Featuring 11 Gbps-per-port across a fully, non-blocking, 144 channel switching matrix, the VSC3040 boasts the highest capacity available in any integrated circuit. In addition to sheer bandwidth capacity, Vitesse’s integrated signal equalization technology, EQ Technology™, is a key enabler in moving 11 Gbps signals across PCBs, backplanes and cables.

The VSC3040 offers a pin-compatible, 11 Gbps port upgrade path to customers currently using the Vitesse 4.25G VSC3140 or 6.5G VSC3144 products.

The VSC3040 is available in a 45 mm × 45 mm, 1.27 mm pin pitch, 1072-pin BGA package. VSC3040 Evaluation Systems are available now. Volume production is scheduled for the second quarter of 2007.
